Begin with a memorial, not a biography
Paliya is a local term used for memorial stones in Gujarat and adjoining areas. Record the local designation before applying a broader label such as hero stone. A carved rider, hand or weapon is not enough to determine the identity, circumstances of death or meaning of a particular memorial.
Read image and text separately
Describe the carving literally: number of figures, posture, objects, panel divisions and damaged areas. Then photograph and transcribe the text as a separate task. Combining these records is useful, but avoid inventing words to fit an image or assigning a narrative because it resembles another stone.
A comparison with a documented object
ASI Goa Museum's Bondla hero stone, accession acc-no-0004, is catalogued as a 13th-century object with battle scenes in three panels and linga worship above. It shows how a museum documents a particular memorial. It is a Goa comparison, not proof that a Gujarati paliya has the same imagery, date or meaning.
Respect living memory and uncertain dates
A memorial may still have ritual significance. Ask before photographing people or ceremonies, do not move offerings, and do not handle the stone. Preserve local accounts with consent and attribution. If a calendar era is unclear, retain the date exactly as seen and leave the conversion pending.
Field exercise: rider and damaged text
For a stone showing a rider above two damaged lines, write “rider visible; name unreadable” first. Put a caretaker's account in a separately attributed note. Request a specialist reading of the surviving date and words before calling it a battle death, a named hero or a specific historical event.
